Recruiting Challenges Hindering the Growth of Small Business in the U.S.

While the economy is remaining strong, many small businesses in the United States are still struggling to grow their business. One of the biggest challenges facing business leaders today, is recruiting qualified candidates.

Interview Large

In a recent survey conducted by Indeed with small businesses, 97% of respondents reported difficulty in hiring the right candidate at least occasionally. While even the nation’s largest employers are fighting to attract top talent, small businesses experience a different set of challenges that can increase the difficulty in recruiting, even for lesser skilled positions. A few of their challenges include:

  • Less brand recognition
  • Less resources dedicated to job marketing
  • Less access to resume search databases and top job boards
  • Less resources dedicated specifically to recruiting talent
  • Less experience creating job postings that attract candidates
  • Less growth opportunities
  • Less competitive compensation and benefit packages

While many small businesses struggle in the areas listed above, many have competitive packages and growth opportunities that if marketed properly could attract the same level of talent that they are losing today to larger competitors. If you are a small business struggling to attract talent, often times your current staff can provide you with some great recruiting advantages.

In today’s job market, the more options you deploy in your recruitment strategy the better results you’re likely to see. Consider an anonymous survey to your current staff in regards to what they like best and least about their roles within your organization. Often times they can provide you with insight as to what you should best market to potential candidates. Offering referral bonuses is also a great way to increase your recruiting resources with little investment. As many as 90% of businesses, partner with third party recruiters to assist them in their recruiting challenges. Most recruitment firms offer terms and conditions that allow you the option to engage in recruiting help with no fees unless they locate a candidate that you choose to hire.
