College Grads, Still Seeking Your First Post School Job? /blog/college-grads-still-seeking-your-first-post-school-job/ /blog/college-grads-still-seeking-your-first-post-school-job/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 14:15:31 +0000 /blog/?p=5541 Continue reading ]]> Whether you graduated from a college or university this past Spring or Summer, if you’re still struggling to find your first post college job, it may be time to switch up your strategy a bit.

Interview Large

For many college graduates, the prospect of finding your first post college opportunity can feel overwhelming and a scary prospect. However, there are few key factors to keep in mind while you are searching for employment in this tight job market.

  1. Do some research and contact your local temporary agency. Working with a temporary agency will allow you to not only gain experience in your preferred industry but these types of agency can typically get you working in a shorter amount of time. In a job market as tight as this one, you are not the only group struggling. Employers and companies nationwide are having a hard time finding qualified candidates to fill their open positions, leading them to turn to temporary agencies.
  2. As ideal as it would be for your first job out of college to be your long-term position, it will most likely be the first of multiple stepping stones. As it is becoming more common practice for companies to take employees away from each other, job length expectancy is certainly shorter than it used to be. However, employers are aware of this being an issue and are working towards a solution. Currently, there is a huge culture shift within organizations to put more emphasis on employee retention and recognition in order to secure top talent for a longer period of time.
  3. Continue to develop your education and knowledge in your respective industry. While receiving a college degree is a fantastic accomplishment, it is only the first step in developing who you are going to be as a working professional. On the job experience is just as important to ensuring that you are forever adapting to changes in industry, technology and social economics. Regardless of your area of expertise and the level at which you are in your career, it is imperative to continue to stay on top of the best practices and changes in your respective industry as a whole. This may arise from on the job learning, online courses, company provided training, etc.

The main takeaway here is patience. We all want to graduate from college, land our dream job and be done with it. The reality is that through hard-work, determination and an eagerness to grow in your field, your dream career could be just around the corner, you just have to be patient and treat each job and opportunity as a stepping stone down your career path.

Military Construction Projects on the Rise for 2019! /blog/military-construction-projects-on-the-rise-for-2019/ /blog/military-construction-projects-on-the-rise-for-2019/#respond Mon, 17 Sep 2018 16:34:37 +0000 /blog/?p=5452 Continue reading ]]> It’s hard to believe that we are already looking into 2019 in terms of industry trends and what to expect on the job market landscape. Believe it or not, US Lawmakers have already signed legislation to increase spending on Military construction projects by 2.4% in the coming year. That equates to earmarking $10.3 million just for military related construction projects in 2019.

Construction Group of Professionals Smaller

This measure provides funding to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its Directorate of Civil Works (for harbor maintenance, lock, dam, levee and environmental restoration), the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (for hospitals, medical clinics, cemeteries). As this is great news for those contractors that specialize in government related construction projects including infrastructure, VA hospitals, etc., there may also be room for smaller general contractors and subcontractors who are trying to get their foot in the door with military projects. For additional information on how your company may be able to get a piece of this lucrative pie in 2019, check out constructiondive.com for details and additional resources.

Back To School = Safety Reminders for ALL Drivers! /blog/back-to-school-safety-reminders-for-all-drivers/ /blog/back-to-school-safety-reminders-for-all-drivers/#respond Thu, 30 Aug 2018 16:28:37 +0000 /blog/?p=5402 Continue reading ]]> The time has come for everyone who uses the roads to once again start thinking about the fact that kids are getting ready to go back to school. That means more cars on the roads, school buses in full operation and an army of young pedestrians crossing roads on the way to school. Nearly 22 million students will be getting onto buses this late summer and fall.

Bus Safety

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, riding a bus to school is 13 times safer than riding in a passenger vehicle and 10 safer than walking to school. The reality is that more children are hurt outside the bus. Given that pedestrian – vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death for school age children, it’s vital that truck drivers pay attention to posted signs, signals and traffic. Below are tips to help keep our kids safe this school year:

  • Watch for school zones – Look for signs and flashing lights during school hours.
  • Slow down in school zones and stay alert – Children are unpredictable.
  • Watch for crossing guards.
  • Watch for school buses – All states have strict laws regarding passing a stopped school bus.
  • Never pass on the right side of the bus.
  • Adjust driving hours if possible.
  • Minimize use on secondary roads, use freeways and highways when possible.
  • Have a heightened sense of awareness on rural highways and state routes for stopped buses.
  • Be aware of traffic congestion in college towns.
  • Don’t block the crosswalk.
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.
  • Don’t honk your horn or rev your engine to rush a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way.
  • Make sure your headlights are on.
  • Take extra care to look for children near schools, residential areas, parks and playgrounds.

While drivers are always safety conscious, it is important they not take it for granted. Don’t be tempted to make a call or fall victim to any other distraction that may take your eyes off the road. We all need to adopt a safety-first mindset if we are to keep accidents at a minimum and our children safe.

A FREE and EASY Way to Combat Low Unemployment! /blog/a-free-and-easy-way-to-combat-low-unemployment/ /blog/a-free-and-easy-way-to-combat-low-unemployment/#respond Thu, 26 Jul 2018 15:07:32 +0000 /blog/?p=5292 Continue reading ]]> Although the national unemployment rate increased from May to June, it is still extremely low, sitting at around 4%. This can be a very real and scary situation for employers who may be in desperate need of finding qualified workers. However, by making a few small and FREE changes to your recruiting strategy, you can still have your company and job openings stand out among the competition.

stockxpertcom_id398357_size1

Today’s job market is, in every sense of the phrase, a job seeker’s market. With the demand for qualified talent at an all time high, candidates understand that they can be more demanding and much more selective in not only the position they choose but the company they work for. With this in mind, here are a few tips to help ensure that potential employees see your job openings as attractive and more enticing.

  • The candidate’s experience matters! No amount of marketing can save a company culture that doesn’t put the candidate experience at the top of the priority list. The best part about simply treating potential employees better during the entire recruiting process is that it is 100% FREE. Surprisingly one of the easiest ways to improve the candidate experience is to simply communicate better. If you reach out to a candidate regarding a position, keep the lines of communication open. You would get frustrated too if you applied online, came into an office, talked to a Recruiter and then the communication went silent. Stand apart and communicate better!
    • Stay on top of sending responses to candidates. Even if your existing ATS does some of this automatically, it is still important to include a human element to responding to interested candidates. Time may not allow you to communicate with all applicants but do the best you can, whether that is via phone or email.
    • Screened candidates love feedback! Staying in contact with candidates through the entirety of the interview and recruiting process will ease concerns and make the candidates feel more comfortable working with you as a Recruiter and your company as a whole.
    • No matter the situation, do not give candidates the silent treatment. Whether or not you are able to place the candidate on a current assignment, be sure to provide feedback in a respectful manner. If possible, provide constructive criticism and try to suggest avenues with which they may be able to improve their hire-ability. It’s important to remember that word travels fast and if an applicant feels like they were treated well by you and your staff, they will remember that and spread the word.

This may not seem like rocket science or anything over the top exciting, however just by making these small changes to your company’s recruiting strategy can go a long way. In the end, the main goal is to attract and retain qualified candidates and improving the candidate experience is the fastest and easiest way to reach this goal.

The Trillium brand of companies is privately owned by René Poch and provides more than 30 years of industry leading recruitment and staffing services through its divisions including: Trillium Staffing, Trillium Construction Services, Trillium Driver Solutions, Trillium Marine, Trillium Technical, Trillium Environmental, and Trillium Techs.
