Optical Design Engineer

Trillium Professional is now seeking an Optical Design Engineer for a short-term, 2 month assignment in Waltham, MA!

Pay rate should be in the $75-85/hr range.

Key Responsibilities
Optical Design & Development
•    Design optical light pipes and light guide systems to achieve uniform illumination from LED sources
•    Develop optical architectures and perform design tradeoffs for performance, cost, and manufacturability
•    Perform optical simulations and analysis (ray tracing, light extraction efficiency, uniformity) [interviewguy.com]
•    Optimize designs for brightness uniformity, efficiency, and minimal artifacts

Modeling, Analysis & Testing
•    Conduct optical simulations using tools such as Zemax, LightTools, or equivalent
•    Perform tolerance analysis and sensitivity studies to ensure robust performance across manufacturing variation [interviewguy.com]
•    Build and evaluate prototypes; analyze test data and iterate designs

Materials & Manufacturing
•    Select materials (e.g., PC, PMMA, optical silicones) and surface treatments (diffusers, microstructures)
•    Design for high-volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding or extrusion
•    Collaborate with suppliers to define tooling, finishes, and quality requirements
System Integration
•    Work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and industrial design teams to integrate optical subsystems [interviewguy.com]
•    Define mechanical interfaces, tolerances, and alignment features
•    Ensure designs meet system-level requirements (thermal, environmental, reliability)

Documentation & Execution
•    Create optical specifications, drawings, and test plans
•    Support design reviews and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly
•    Drive projects from concept through prototype and production release

Qualifications Required
•    Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field
•    5+ years of experience in optical/illumination design (consumer, automotive, medical, or industrial products)
•    Proven experience designing light pipes or light guides for LED-based systems
•    Hands-on experience taking optical designs from concept to production [RE: [Exter…Expertise | Outlook]
•    Proficiency with optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, LightTools, TracePro)
Preferred
•    Experience with injection-molded optical components and DFM
•    Knowledge of microstructures, diffusion features, and surface texturing
•    Experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo) for opto-mechanical integration
•    Familiarity with optical metrology and test methods (uniformity, luminance, efficiency) [torchora.com]
•    Strong understanding of geometrical optics, scattering, and light transport
•    Ability to translate optical theory into manufacturable designs
•    Data-driven problem solving and design optimization
•    Cross-functional collaboration and communication
