Purchasing Specialist
Trillium is seeking a Purchasing Specialist in Waterbury, CT!
This Direct-Hire opportunity is seeking an experienced Purchaser/Procurement Specialist to manage all raw material and subcontracted service procurement for a growing AISC-certified structural steel fabricator. The Purchaser/Procurement Specialist owns the entire purchasing function — from sourcing structural steel, hardware, coatings, and galvanizing services to ensuring full DOT, Buy America, and AISC compliance. You’ll work closely with estimating, production, QC, and project management while navigating the documentation, traceability, and regulatory requirements that come with DOT infrastructure work.
This is a critical, high-visibility position requiring deep knowledge of steel grades, ASTM standards, MTRs, galvanizing processes, and state DOT requirements. You will negotiate pricing, manage vendor relationships, coordinate deliveries, and maintain airtight compliance files for audits and project closeouts.
Responsibilities:
-Procure structural steel products — including W-shapes, HSS, plate, angles, and channels — along with all required hardware based on project BOMs
-Place orders in accordance with applicable ASTM specifications (A36, A572, A588, A709, A1085, A123/A153)
-Review and validate MTRs to confirm chemical/mechanical properties and proper heat/lot traceability
-Oversee Buy America compliance and maintain all DOT-mandated procurement documentation
-Coordinate all galvanizing and coating purchases, transportation, and turnaround timelines
-Acquire anchor rod assemblies, structural bolts, breakaway/slip-base components, and other specialty hardware
-Compile and submit material documentation packages required for DOT approval and project compliance
-Generate, monitor, and close purchase orders while keeping committed cost data accurate and up to date
-Align material deliveries with the production schedule to prevent shortages or excess inventory
-Build and sustain vendor relationships, obtain competitive pricing, and track steel market trends for cost control
Schedule is 1st Shift / Monday–Friday / 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM. This is an onsite position in Waterbury, CT. Annual salary is $95,000 – $110,000 annually DOE.

-Minimum of 3 years’ experience handling procurement or purchasing within structural steel fabrication, heavy construction, or a metals-focused manufacturing environment
-Solid understanding of structural steel shapes, grades, and ASTM material standards including A36, A572, A709, A588, and A1085
-Ability to interpret and verify mill test reports (MTRs) and maintain proper material traceability
-Working knowledge of hot-dip galvanizing requirements and ASTM A123/A153 specifications
-Background supporting DOT or public-sector infrastructure projects with strict Buy America compliance
-Competence in reading structural steel drawings, fabrication details, and project BOMs
-Strong proficiency in Excel and/or ERP procurement tools with a high level of accuracy in documentation
-Demonstrated success negotiating pricing and managing vendor relationships
Preferred:
-Prior purchasing experience within an AISC-certified fabrication environment
-Familiarity with AASHTO LTS-6 design requirements and related structural hardware
-Experience navigating DOT Approved/Qualified Products Lists for CT, NY, RI, or PA
-Understanding of PA Bulletin 15 procurement documentation or similar state compliance programs
-Knowledge of breakaway and slip-base hardware systems and NCHRP 350/MASH crashworthiness standards
-Exposure to procurement for high-mast lighting poles, mast arms, or traffic signal structures
-Experience reviewing BOMs generated from Tekla Structures or comparable detailing software
-Awareness of IIJA Buy America domestic content rules and certification processes
