Project Engineer

Trillium Construction is now seeking a Project Engineer – Steel (Civil Infrastructure) for direct-hire in Newark!

Salary $96-141k per year. A major civil infrastructure project team is seeking a Project Engineer specializing in steel structures to support a large-scale transportation project at a major international airport.

This role is responsible for managing the engineering and coordination of steel-related work throughout the project lifecycle, including design review, fabrication coordination, field support, and installation oversight. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with structural steel systems within complex civil construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
-Manage and coordinate steel-related engineering activities from design through fabrication and erection.
-Review and interpret structural steel drawings, specifications, and contract documents to ensure compliance with project requirements.
-Collaborate with design engineers, steel fabricators, subcontractors, and field teams to resolve technical challenges and optimize construction methods.
-Prepare and review engineering calculations, material takeoffs, and steel quantity estimates.
-Conduct site visits and field inspections to monitor installation progress, quality control, and safety compliance.
-Coordinate procurement and delivery of steel materials, ensuring adherence to specifications and project schedules.
-Identify project risks related to steel structures and assist in developing mitigation strategies.
-Support project scheduling, budgeting, and reporting, particularly related to steel scope.
-Ensure compliance with industry codes, standards, and project safety requirements.
-Provide technical guidance to field staff and junior engineers regarding steel construction processes and best practices.

Qualifications
-Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field
-5+ years of experience as a Project Engineer within civil construction projects involving steel structures
-Strong knowledge of steel fabrication, welding, and erection processes
-Familiarity with relevant standards such as AISC and AWS
-Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and specifications
-Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, STAAD.Pro, or similar
-Strong problem-solving and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
-Excellent communication and collaboration skills working with multidisciplinary teams
-Understanding of construction safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements

Preferred Qualifications
-Experience on large infrastructure projects involving steel bridges, heavy civil structures, or industrial facilities
-Project Management certification (PMP) or structural engineering licensure
-Experience with BIM platforms and construction management software
