What To Expect From The Construction Industry in 2019! /blog/what-to-expect-from-the-construction-industry-in-2019/ /blog/what-to-expect-from-the-construction-industry-in-2019/#respond Tue, 30 Apr 2019 12:57:22 +0000 /blog/?p=6503 Continue reading ]]> We may already be a quarter of the way through the new year but it is never to late to try and plan for what lies ahead. This is no different for the construction industry in 2019. However, a report released in late 2018 may, in fact, show a very minimal change in construction activity, only increasing in revenue by about $2 million from the previous year. So what does this mean?

In short, this could simply mean that while record growth within the construction industry is starting to plateau, spending and activity related to projects are most likely going to stay constant through 2019 with very minimal increases in overall spending. However, there are still some key factors that indicate a change is on the horizon. Based on past events with a similarly strong economy, this level of growth and spending is simply not sustainable over a long period of time.

Chief Economist and VP of Dodge Data & Analytics, Robert Murray, believes that a even if the construction industry sees a decrease in activity that doesn’t necessarily mean that the overall state will suffer a decline. It is his belief that overall value and spending on construction starts will achieve a “deceleration…the enhanced level of activity that has been achieved over the past several years.” In essence, the construction industry may fall back to where spending and activity was at its most profitable and sustainable over the past few years; a decline but not drastic.

However, according to Cristian deRitis, the Senior Director of Moody’s Analytics, the biggest red flag indicating an economic decline is the steady but low unemployment rate. Cristian argues that, historically, “any time unemployment hovers around 4.5%, recession comes about three years later.” And, in fact, ever since March of 2018, the unemployment rate has been steadily dropping. With this information in mind, according to Moody’s Analytics and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this could mean that the economy is due for a recession next summer.

In addition, it is no surprise that the desperate demand for a skilled workforce is effecting the overall health of the construction industry. In a recent survey performed by the Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk, 81% of those surveyed said they are having a hard time filling craft positions and 56% said the same thing about salaried positions. Where a small number of contractors are attempting to sustain through the labor shortage, the overall problem is that economists agree that is a problem that isn’t going away overnight. Only time will tell how much the construction industry will be able to retain this level of productivity through a long-term labor shortage and consistent low unemployment rates. However, all signs seem to point to 2019 remaining steady and profitable.

How Awareness and Early Education Can Combat the Construction Labor Shortage! /blog/how-awareness-and-early-education-can-combat-the-construction-labor-shortage/ /blog/how-awareness-and-early-education-can-combat-the-construction-labor-shortage/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 14:00:25 +0000 /blog/?p=5804 Continue reading ]]> It is no surprise to anyone in the skilled trades industry that we are in the middle of a very serious and real labor shortage. In fact, according to timesunion.com, 80% of US based construction companies surveyed are experiencing problems in finding qualified workers, mainly hourly skilled trades workers. Just within the state of NY, 79% of companies stated having issues locating hourly workers, according to the Associated General Contractors of America;s 2018 Workforce Survey.

Guy on site Smaller

What is our best line of defense right now, in the middle of the chaos? Simple, across the board, the average hourly earnings in the construction industry are higher than the average of all private sector positions (excluding farming) by over 10%! Not to mention that a large majority of construction trades do not require a college degree, this should be a fairly easy sell, right? Unfortunately, that is proving to not be the case.

The conversation regarding skilled trades opportunities has to start before today’s youth hits the workforce. This information needs to be getting in front of parents, guidance counselors, educational leaders, and the students themselves at a younger age. There seems to be a miss-conception and stigma attached to positions in the construction industry, that they may not be able to make a living wage. This couldn’t farther from the truth as James Haas, a learning coordinator with Capital Region Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) reiterates.

“We’ve got to get mom and dad, we’ve got to get the guidance counselors, we’ve got to get the kids to understand that it’s not always a baccalaureate degree (that’s necessary),” Haas said. “Laborers are making real, living wages, that have good benefits, that have a Monday through Friday work schedule. And they’re probably making $1500 a week.”

BOCES has been partnering with school districts for over 70 years in an attempt to better garner and promote evolving and necessary educational programs. For more information on how you or school district can get involved with BOCES, please visit their website at www.boces.org.

This could and should be powerful information that needs to be getting in front of families and educational institutions. We all need to keep in mind that the shortage of workers in the skilled trades industry ultimately can affect everyone in the economy. The shortage can lead to public and private sector construction projects taking longer, costing more money and in the end stunting overall economic growth. It is up to all of us, including our educational system to once again get students excited about the skilled trades industry. There are and will continue to be excellent skilled trades opportunities out there, just waiting for the next generation to step in and take the charge.

Demand for Experienced Skilled Trades Talent Grows /blog/demand-for-experienced-skilled-trades-talent-grows/ /blog/demand-for-experienced-skilled-trades-talent-grows/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 12:20:08 +0000 /blog/?p=4014 Continue reading ]]> The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the construction industry will face a shortage of 1.6 million workers by 2022. So how did an industry that let go more than 2 million workers during the recession, well more than any other industry, end up in the talent struggle?

Image of construction worker on construction site, working on site where skyscraper is being built. Manual worker has protective helmet and protective uniform. Image taken with Nikon D800 and professional Nikon lens, developed from RAW in highest resolution. Location: Novi Sad, Serbia, Europe

Currently, there is only one tradesman entering the workforce for every 5 that retire. With 73% of construction firms planning to expand their headcount throughout 2017, this leaves the industry in a continued shortage for qualified talent. The Associated General Contractors of America reported that construction firms added employees over the past year at nearly double the rate of the overall economy. In June alone, the industry added 16,000 jobs across the country.

The shortage of talent comes from a number of factors including:

 • Fewer apprenticeship programs
 • Fewer trade/vocational programs
 • A much faster rate of talent leaving the industry than joining it
 • The number of tradesmen who left the industry during the recession and sought other professions
 • Growing number of construction projects across the nation

The talent shortage has caused contractors to delay job completions, pay costly overtime, hire under-skilled staff and offer per diem options to attract non-local workers to their projects.

Hiring inexperienced workers can result in costly mistakes, injuries and delays to schedules. Trillium Construction Services specializes in recruiting skilled trades and construction management talent for long term and short term hiring needs across the country. With more than 30 years of experience, Trillium is ranked the 24th Largest Industrial Staffing Firm in the nation, hiring more than 40,000 employees each year in all 50 states. Heavy Industrial Staffing: Finding An Industrial Staffing Agency /blog/heavy-industrial-staffing-whats-the-difference/ Tue, 03 Jun 2014 18:19:32 +0000 /blog/?p=2082 Continue reading ]]> Have you tried unsuccessfully to partner with traditional staffing agencies for your heavy industrial staffing needs? There are several factors that set heavy industrial staffing agencies apart from traditional staffing agencies.

shutterstock_51659 4592Resized

Many light industrial staffing agencies recruit for positions such as welders, fabricators, and other semi-skilled positions. The majority of these positions are light in nature and require far less training and experience than skilled trades positions. Hiring unskilled workers for heavy industrial positions such as pipe fitters, pipe welders, industrial electricians, combo welders, and millwrights could result in losses and damages in the tens of thousands of dollars in as quickly as one day on the job. In addition to damaged materials, equipment, and loss of production, unskilled workers performing heavy industrial jobs are more likely to get injured on the job.

The processes, tools, and equipment involved in industrial construction projects can often result in serious injuries when duties are performed by unskilled workers. While the ability to get someone in place for the position faster by partnering with an existing partner may seem appealing, the consequences can be long term.

So how do you identify a skilled trades staffing agency or industrial staffing agency? Here are a few ways to identify a skilled trades recruiter:

 • The company website shows that at least a portion of their staff is dedicated to skilled trades or industrial staffing.
 • They should provide a list of positions that they staff for industrial projects such as pipe fitters, pipe welders, industrial electricians, combo welders, and millwrights.
 • Ask them how many shutdowns and turnarounds they supplied staff for in the past year. If they seem confused, continue your search elsewhere.
 • Ask them to describe how they support and encourage safety for their industrial and skilled trades workers. If their answer is generic in nature such as a basic safety quiz or video is performed upon hire, they likely do not specialize in industrial and skilled trades placements.
 • Inquire as to what safety services and training are available through their company. Do they employ a full time safety team?
 • Ask for references. If you are still unsure about a staffing agency’s ability to provide you with safe and skilled industrial workers ask them to if they are able to provide a list of industrial projects they have provided skilled trades staff for in the past.

Obtaining, running, and managing heavy industrial construction projects can be difficult enough with qualified and experienced industrial workers. Don’t chance your company’s reputation, financial state, and future with unskilled talent on the job.

Hurricane and Disaster Cleanups Slowed By Talent Shortages /blog/hurricane-and-disaster-cleanups-slowed-by-talent-shortages/ Tue, 02 Jul 2013 19:43:05 +0000 /blog/?p=1175 Continue reading ]]> The impact that a natural disaster can have on a community is profound. Consider the short and long term effects of Katrina and Sandy on not only their local areas, but nationwide as the valuable services that are provided by these communities are cut off. Unfortunately natural disasters usually wipe out the local and regional resources, making recovery time longer and causing additional hardships on those involved.

Eco2

Hurricane Sandy brought to light the need for experienced skilled trades and environmental workers that are available to mobilize to different areas quickly. With many local contractors without equipment, personnel, and communication devices outside contractors were a critical part of the recovery and restoration process.

With hurricane season upon us, now is the time to consider your resources before disaster strikes. Most environmental and construction restoration contractors do not employ enough personnel to take on projects of this magnitude without adding to their workforce. In addition to the need to quickly mobilize, contractors should ensure that their additional project personnel are qualified, trained, and appropriately certified to be performing the work. Having skilled workers available at the moment that disaster strikes, can be invaluable to your business and allow you to take on additional project loads quickly and efficiently.

When considering a staffing partner for remediation and restoration work be sure to verify the following:

 • The staffing partner specializes in your line of work.
 • The staffing partner is well established and is able to demonstrate their previous abilities to hire for these roles.
 • The staffing partner has a pool of pre-qualified candidates.
 • The staffing partner is experienced in disaster related projects.
 • The staffing partner specializes in mobile workforces.
