Career Goals for the New Year /blog/career-goals-for-the-new-year/ Mon, 20 Jan 2014 02:17:35 +0000 /blog/?p=1729 Continue reading ]]> Have you set your career goals for the new year? It’s not too late to do so! Here are a few tips to help you set, monitor, and obtain your career goals for 2014!

stockxpertcom_id11978_size1

  • Know your starting line. Having a clear idea of where you are starting the new year in your career can help you identify the best steps to take to achieve your goals. Take a moment to identify and write down where you are in your skill set, career, and position.
  • Identify where you want to go, in the long term. Are you looking to enter a new career path? Progress with your current organization? Seek a new position? Enter management? Identify and write down your long term objective and what drives you towards this goal.
  • Determine what steps you can feasibly achieve this year. While your long term goal may or may not be obtainable this calendar year, your progression towards it certainly can! Determine what skills, experiences, and education you may need to begin the process. Make a list and give yourself periodic deadlines that are reasonable to achieve these goals.
  • Find a mentor. Identify someone that you admire professionally and reach out to them for assistance in reaching your goals. How were they able to achieve their goals? How did they maintain a balance between their personal and professional lives? What advice do they have to offer?
  • Monitor your progress. Regularly monitor your progress towards your short and long term goals. Are you making progress? Do you need more information or assistance to achieve certain goals? Celebrate your small achievements and be honest with yourself about your short comings.
  • Stay the course. Anything worth doing is worth doing well, right? You’re likely to experience set backs and delays during this progress but all can become learning opportunities. Lean on your support system to keep you grounded and focused on achieving your goals!

Your Employees Are Looking To Leave! /blog/your-employees-are-looking-to-leave/ Tue, 02 Jul 2013 13:55:51 +0000 /blog/?p=1177 Continue reading ]]> Do you think your employees are happy with their current career? Think again! A recent study by University of Phoenix found that may not be the case. The continuous improvement of economic conditions and the increased career opportunities in most industries, has assisted in the increase of passive candidates. So who are these passive candidates?

  • 78% of workers in their 20’s are interested in changing careers
  • 64% of workers in their 30’s are interested in changing careers
  • 54% of workers in their 40’s are interested in changing careers
  • 51% of workers in their 50’s are interested in changing careers
  • 26% of workers who are in their 60’s or older are interested in changing careers

With such a large majority of the workforce interested in making a career change, maintaining your strongest performers can be an uphill battle. The struggle to locate top level talent has resulted in many employers offering a multitude of incentives to locate strong performers including referral bonuses, larger relocation packages, sign on bonuses, and other perks making the decision to leave a current employer more appealing for some candidates who may be on the fence about making a career change. So what can you do to maintain your team?

The high costs attributed to employee turnover far outweigh the costs of most employee retention and appreciation programs. If your organization does not engage in an employee retention program, now is a great time to consider employing one!
