Managing a fleet, remaining in compliance, and engaging a safety program is a lot to handle. Often times, employers lose focus on safety in the shuffle of handling multiple job responsibilities and keeping tabs on the latest regulations. How quickly can this add up?

Before cutting back on your safety program and enforcements consider the following:

  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of occupational fatalities in the country.
  • A motor vehicle fatality occurs about every twelve minutes.
  • Crashes cost employers $60 billion in 2000.
  • Employers lost 3 million workdays in 2000 due to motor vehicle accidents.
  • More than 90% of motor vehicle accidents are a result of human error.
  • Annually, about 20% of a fleet is involved in a crash.
  • Not including indirect costs, an on the job non-fatal crash can cost over $76,000.

There is a direct correlation between a strong safety program and lowered accident occurrences. With over 90% of accidents being caused by human error, employers have a strong ability to curb their organization’s accident rates. Employing a strong safety program, employee incentives for safe driving practices, and a strong employee screening process can go a long way in protecting your bottom line.

The $650B Per Year Burden For Employers /blog/the-650b-per-year-burden-for-employers/ Mon, 18 Feb 2013 21:03:18 +0000 /blog/?p=684 Continue reading ]]> Following the recent recession, most employers are more cost aware than ever before. Protecting the bottom line and reducing costs has become a topic on the forefront of many employers minds and their strategic planning. Are you looking for ways to reduce costs? You cannot afford to miss out on what is costing employers an estimated $650 billion each year!

Basex  released research that lists the productivity cost of workplace interruptions including employee abuse and misuse of social media at $650 billion a year. As social media continues to grow, diversify, and maintain a strong mobile audience this number is not likely to decline in the near future. While many companies have installed tracking software and blocked social media sites, the fact remains clear that employees can and will access these profiles through their mobile devices.

Social Media Workplace

Many employers are still working at a reduced staff level following the recession and the loss of productivity due to misuse of social media can have a dramatic effect on their organization. In addition to loss of productivity, employers can face PR nightmares like the recent backlash that Applebee’s experienced. As the liabilities and costs continue to increase, how can you protect yourself?

  • Implement and enforce a social media plan. Work with your labor or employment law attorney to develop a plan that protects your staff and your organization from undue liabilities or exposures.
  • Increase employee interaction. Employees may be turning to social media due to lack of social interaction in the workplace. Encourage and foster teamwork, group projects, and provide a common area that fosters communication between co-workers during break times.
  • Focus on time management. Work with your staff on time management skills and provide employee incentives for increased productivity.
  • Challenge and engage your team. Provide your employees with projects and responsibilities that keep them challenged and engaged in their positions.

While it may be nearly impossible to stop employee use of social media on the job you can implement processes, procedures, and policies to provide a work environment that keeps employees engaged and focused on their daily responsibilities. Keep in mind, it is best practice to speak with someone experienced in labor and employment law before implementing a policy or procedure related to social media.

The Family and Medical Leave Act has caused employers across the nation to scratch their heads with questions and concerns over the past two decades. FMLA ranks as the federal statue with most questions asked in SHRM’s Knowledge Center, even after 20 years in play.  In the past few years FMLA has also become a hot topic on Social Media, prompting hundreds of groups and discussions on Twitter and LinkedIn. This mass of communication makes one thing clear, FMLA can be a confusing federal statue that leads employers and HR professionals across the country to constantly be seeking more information and clarification.

003

According to a recent study by the Department of Labor:

  • Approximately 16% of employees took FMLA leave within the past year.
  • The majority of employees who participated in an FMLA leave did so due to their own illness.
  • Approximately 19% took FMLA to care for a family member with a serious illness.
  • Approximately 22% took FMLA to care for a new child.
  • Approximately 56% of employees who took FMLA were female.
  • Approximately 70% of workers who took FMLA had returned to work in 40 days or less.

While not all employers or employees fall under the FMLA, the importance of remaining compliant for those employers who do is crucial. For more information on how you can remain compliant and basic information on FMLA visit the DOL here.
