Layoffs Remain In Headlines, Returns To Work Delayed /blog/layoffs-remain-in-headlines-returns-to-work-delayed/ /blog/layoffs-remain-in-headlines-returns-to-work-delayed/#respond Mon, 23 Jan 2023 14:44:20 +0000 /blog/?p=8276 Continue reading ]]> Over the last few months, large corporations have made headlines with major job cuts. These cuts come on the heels of a multi-year hiring surge in most industries and an employment market dominated by job seeker demands for pay increases, remote work opportunities and sign on bonuses at increasing levels.

The tech industry has been hit especially hard, reportedly seeing the highest layoff levels since 2000. As layoffs continue and hiring cools in many industries, returning to work for some is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Department of Labor reports 826k unemployed workers remained out of work from 3.5 to 6 months in December. This was a dramatic 36% increase from April of 2022.

If you find yourself in a position of seeking new employment, here are some things to keep in mind in the current economy:

  • Talent supply is increasing while hiring demand is decreasing, as a result US wages are expected to fall back to pre-pandemic levels over the next few months.
  • Make sure that your resume is up to date and enriched with keywords relevant to your skillset. Employers in some industries are flooded with applies and are relying on search strings to quickly identify qualified talent.
  • Be prepared to broaden your job search outside of your industry. Those in technology and talent acquisition may find far less opportunities available and more talent applying for those positions than other industries.
  • Be prepared for a longer than usual return to work and to apply to more positions than usual to land a new role.
  • Remain open to contract and contract to hire roles as employers may be cautious to permanent hires over the next few months.

The Trillium brand of companies is privately owned by René Poch and provides more than 30 years of industry leading recruitment and staffing services through its divisions including: Trillium Staffing, Trillium Construction Services, Trillium Driver Solutions, Trillium Accounting and Finance, and Trillium Professional. Trillium Announces Expansion of Professional Division, Promotion of Paul White /blog/trillium-announces-expansion-of-professional-division-promotion-of-paul-white/ /blog/trillium-announces-expansion-of-professional-division-promotion-of-paul-white/#respond Wed, 19 Oct 2022 12:51:01 +0000 /blog/?p=8232 Continue reading ]]> Founder and CEO of the Trillium brand of staffing companies René Poch, recently announced the expansion of the Trillium Professional brand and promotion of long time employee Paul White.

“Paul White has been with our Trillium Driver division as an Area Manager for 7 years and has had a remarkable track record during that time. Paul owned and operated a successful professional staffing company in California before joining Trillium so he brings a wealth of knowledge with him. He is both excited and passionate about this opportunity.” – René Poch, CEO

Trillium Professional previously specializing in the recruitment of accounting and finance, will also now include the Trillium Technical division who has been providing IT and engineering recruitment since 1984 under the Trillium Technical and formerly Computer and Engineering Services brands. As part of this strategy Paul White Area Manager with Trillium for seven years, was promoted to the position of Vice President of Trillium Professional.

“A CEO at a large firm in Peoria, IL said to me after we started a search for a controller for her ‘ I didn’t realize that I could get this level of service and delivery from a search firm.’ I told her you can’t except from this one.  We’ve been throwing life preservers to executives for years. We placed 2 direct hire candidates and 2 contractors with her in 6 months in three business verticals accounting, engineering and technical. Consolidating the power of our professional services, just makes sense. It allows our clients a seamless process to hire professionals in multiple verticals without starting from scratch in educating a firm on their company culture and priorities in a candidate.” – Paul White, VP of Trillium Professional

The Importance Of Maintaining A Routine /blog/the-importance-of-maintaining-a-routine/ /blog/the-importance-of-maintaining-a-routine/#respond Mon, 05 Oct 2020 14:57:28 +0000 /blog/?p=7727 Continue reading ]]> The COVID-19 pandemic has uprooted our lives in so many different ways. While much of that is beyond your control, how you respond to those changes and the habits that you maintain have a direct impact on how quickly you rebound from this ordeal.

There are countless benefits to maintaining a routine, even when times are good. Healthy routines are proven to benefit your mental health, time management, finances, efficiencies and boost your confidence. This is especially crucial when many areas of your life may feel out of control and can make re-entry to the workforce following Stay at Home orders easier. Here are some quick tips!

  • Maintain a consistent schedule- It’s hard to feel and perform at your best when you are tired. Sticking to a consistent sleep and waking schedule keeps your mind and body tuned in to being productive and alert.
  • Remain active- Does your typical job require a lot of physical activity? Can you imagine how difficult it would be to return to work after not performing those duties for weeks or months? That can quickly result in painful injuries. Even with gyms closed, there are many free online fitness resources and even simple work around your home and regular walks can bring great benefits for those without medical restrictions.
  • Self care- It’s easy to fall into a sluggish feeling if you aren’t keeping with your daily care routine. Whether you are working from home or out of work currently, sticking your usual morning routine of getting dressed and around for the day can quickly gear your mindset up.
  • Stay connected- Find new ways to communicate with friends and family. Some popular options include Zoom meetings, hand written letters and a simple phone call.

The Trillium brand of companies is privately owned by René Poch and provides more than 30 years of industry leading recruitment and staffing services through its divisions including: Trillium Staffing, Trillium Construction Services, Trillium Driver Solutions, Trillium Technical, and Trillium Environmental. College Degree or Nothing? Not anymore! /blog/college-degree-or-nothing-not-anymore/ /blog/college-degree-or-nothing-not-anymore/#respond Tue, 05 Feb 2019 15:05:03 +0000 /blog/?p=6081 Continue reading ]]> Many of us grew up during a time where the notion of going to college was not only expected but was halfway shoved down our throats. Teachers, parents and even our peers were constantly talking about having a college degree was the only way to secure a stable and lucrative career. Many of us fed into this ideal resulting in thousands of dollars of student loan debt and leaving us wondering what was it all for. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are certainly specialized professions and positions that do require college degrees but that doesn’t mean that the college route is for everyone. For those of you that may have a passion for the medical industry, or a variety of engineering disciplines, college may still be the route to take. However, times are, in fact, changing and prospective job seekers have a wide variety of options available!

In today’s job market, it seems that every time the topic of labor shortages come up, the lack of skilled workers for trade positions in construction and in the manufacturing realm are in the forefront. Less and less students have been deciding that even if they are unsure what career path they want to go down, college is their only avenue. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 68% of high school students go to college with 40% never completing their degree. This is leaving highly paid and stable positions across the construction and manufacturing industries empty. Ultimately, we are left with the realization that the Baby Boomers who thrived with careers in these industries are starting to retire with no one to fill their shoes.

As I’ve mentioned before, the conversation regarding career options needs to start early! The idea of college being an end all beat all for post high school students needs to stop. Outside of the traditional 4-year degree, students have a variety of options available including vocational schools, trade specific training programs, online classes and even simply starting from the ground up. Sometimes the best way to learn a new trade is to start as entry-level as possible, observing those around you and gaining true on the job experience. But, don’t take my word for it. Educational leaders and even some of the nation’s most well known and profitable companies are jumping on board. David McGrath, an English Professor at the College of DuPage recently wrote an article regarding this very issue.

“We need to debunk the inference made by parents that vocational and technical jobs are inferior. Such a notion has led many of them to steer youngsters unwilling or unsuited for academic study into frustration, failure and depression. A campaign of public relations, parental education and cash is needed to combat the stigma.”

-David McGrath

Last spring, Glassdoor.com compiled a list of top employers that are expanding their talent pool by looking beyond the 4-year degree. Google, Apple, and IBM are all included in this progressive strategy in an attempt to bring in qualified and eager job seekers. In fact, Joanna Daley, IBM’s Vice President of Talent told CNBC that about 15% of IBM’s hires in the US do not have a college degree. IBM makes a point to include candidates with hands-on experience through coding boot-camps or even vocational classes.

The conversation needs to start now, whether that starts with school counselors or parents at home with their kids. We need to get rid of the stigma behind not going to college and provide our students with the support and proper education on available alternatives. Bottom line, college is not the answer for everyone and that is something worth shouting from the rooftops.

So You Were Ghosted as an Employer…What To Do Now? /blog/so-you-were-ghosted-as-an-employer-what-to-do-now/ /blog/so-you-were-ghosted-as-an-employer-what-to-do-now/#respond Wed, 05 Dec 2018 19:23:39 +0000 /blog/?p=5781 Continue reading ]]> One of the biggest fears of any hiring Manager or Recruiter is having your new hire ghost you on their first day on the job. Unfortunately, day 1 arrives and your hopeful new employee is no where to be found, no call, no text, no email…nothing! What happens now?

Frustrated Worker

Don’t get too discouraged or be hard on yourself. Unfortunately, although this type of behavior is frowned upon and can be considered to be in poor taste, recently ghosting an employer has become a part of the hiring landscape. It all started with candidates just not showing up for interviews and has since escalated into straight up not showing up for their first day of employment. Unfortunately, this new behavior can, in fact, hurt a company’s bottom line. With the cost of recruiting continually on the rise, what can an employer do if and when this happens to them?

  • Sit back, take a breath and look over the hiring process. Was there something within your hiring process that may have deterred the candidate? Was the candidate frustrated or anxious at any point or were they strung along for too long? While it can be easy and human nature to automatically place blame on the candidate, sometimes the underlying reason could fall back on the company itself. However, in such a tight job market, keep in mind that it could have come down to something as simple as they got a better offer.
  • Don’t stop recruiting: Even if you feel like you have a candidate lined up and ready to start, you should continuously keep recruiting. It is never a bad idea to have a few candidates within an arm’s reach should you need it. Also, it is highly likely that you interviewed and screened more than just one candidate. Take a look back at your previous applicants and see if there are any worth a second look before starting the process over.
  • Simply move on: In the event that you or your company is ghosted, you may never know the true reason as to why that individual never showed up. Taking solace in this, you have to keep the hiring process moving forward. Work on any kinks in on-boarding and improve the relationships that your Recruiters are building with the candidates. It is in these relationships that candidates will begin to feel vested with your company and less likely to vanish, without a trace.

It is rather unfortunate that ghosting is infiltrating the workplace and most likely a culture shift could be to blame. However, that doesn’t mean that your company can’t arm itself to better prepare and even prevent ghosting from occurring within your organization. Make the necessary changes, updates and improvements to your hiring process to secure a prospective employee’s faith in your company and how they fit into it.

Importance of Work-Life Harmony, Not Necessarily Balance /blog/importance-of-work-life-harmony-not-necessarily-balance/ /blog/importance-of-work-life-harmony-not-necessarily-balance/#respond Tue, 04 Dec 2018 13:57:44 +0000 /blog/?p=5745 Continue reading ]]> The phrase “work-life balance” tends to get thrown around a lot in today’s job market as a crucial and integral part of what job seekers are looking for in a career. However, according to Time.com and Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos puts it, he isn’t a fan of the phrase at all. The word balance inherently gives the idea of there being a trade-off associated with your work life and your home life. According to Bezos, this should never be the case if you are to be successful and happy in all aspects of your life.

stockxpertcom_id7447131_size2

What does this mean exactly? The idea is that instead of your work life and home life competing with one another, they should be reciprocal in nature.

“If I am happy at home, I come into the office with tremendous energy,” said Bezos. “And if I am happy at work, I come home with tremendous energy. You never want to be that guy — and we all have a coworker who’s that person — who, as soon as they come into a meeting, they drain all the energy out of the room … You want to come into the office and give everyone a kick in their step.”

This ideal is something that Bezos strives to instill with all of his new Amazon employees and even Senior Executives to try and ensure that they stop looking at the relationship between work and home as a strict trade-off and more of a harmonious cyclical concept. The main idea is simple; if you’re happier at home, this opens up your ability to happier at work and visa versa. Coming into work or going home with a positive outlook can transfer to those around you and ultimately create a much healthier and happier environment at home and at work.
