More Than 40% of U.S. Workers Suffer From This. Are You One of Them? /blog/more-than-40-of-u-s-workers-suffer-from-this-are-you-one-of-them/ /blog/more-than-40-of-u-s-workers-suffer-from-this-are-you-one-of-them/#respond Mon, 28 Dec 2020 13:42:26 +0000 /blog/?p=7460 Continue reading ]]> As if the holidays weren’t a whirlwind enough on their own, the new year always brings with it a renewed list of projects, tasks and responsibilities no matter what your line of business is. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that more than 40% of U.S. workers are sleep deprived. What’s worse? Nearly 13% of all workplace injuries in the U.S. may be attributed to fatigue. With stats like that, here’s what you need to know to stay safe in the workplace and help your colleagues do the same.

Some quick stats on the impact of workplace fatigue:

  • Workplace accidents/injuries are 30% more likely to occur on night shifts than day shifts.
  • Working 12 hour shifts? Your risk factor increases by 37% of accident or injury.
  • Fatigue accounts for an estimated loss to employers of $136 billion in health related lost productivity.
  • More than 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder.

So what can we do to help ensure safety in the workplace?

  • Increase headcount to lower the need for extended hours worked during a shift.
  • Whenever possible, schedule employees on a regular and predictable schedule that can help build healthy sleep patterns.
  • Evaluate the work environment for opportunities to increase alertness such as lighting, temperature and bright aesthetics.
  • Offer regularly opportunities for employees to collaborate or work with others for interaction.
  • Provide employees with education pieces on healthy sleep patterns and how to identify the symptoms of fatigue that may impact safety and performance.

Unless you work in a Safety or Risk Management role, you probably don’t give a lot of thought to this topic. Here’s why you should.

The good news? While one of the most frequently reporting injuries, it’s also one of the most preventable type of accident or injury that occurs in the workplace. Here’s little insight into the most frequent causes as well as some tips for prevention:

Causes:

  • Dirty, freshly waxed, wet, poor conditioned or transitioning walking surfaces
  • Uneven or irregular surfaces

  • Weather hazards
  • Uncovered hoses, wires or cluttered walking surfaces
  • Poor lighting conditions, improperly fitting safety equipment, poor hazard signage
  • Fatigue, poor visibility, impairment due to drugs or alcohol, carelessness
  • Carrying objects improperly, distracted employees, rushed employees

Prevention Tips:

The Importance Of Maintaining A Routine /blog/the-importance-of-maintaining-a-routine/ /blog/the-importance-of-maintaining-a-routine/#respond Mon, 05 Oct 2020 14:57:28 +0000 /blog/?p=7727 Continue reading ]]> The COVID-19 pandemic has uprooted our lives in so many different ways. While much of that is beyond your control, how you respond to those changes and the habits that you maintain have a direct impact on how quickly you rebound from this ordeal.

There are countless benefits to maintaining a routine, even when times are good. Healthy routines are proven to benefit your mental health, time management, finances, efficiencies and boost your confidence. This is especially crucial when many areas of your life may feel out of control and can make re-entry to the workforce following Stay at Home orders easier. Here are some quick tips!

  • Maintain a consistent schedule- It’s hard to feel and perform at your best when you are tired. Sticking to a consistent sleep and waking schedule keeps your mind and body tuned in to being productive and alert.
  • Remain active- Does your typical job require a lot of physical activity? Can you imagine how difficult it would be to return to work after not performing those duties for weeks or months? That can quickly result in painful injuries. Even with gyms closed, there are many free online fitness resources and even simple work around your home and regular walks can bring great benefits for those without medical restrictions.
  • Self care- It’s easy to fall into a sluggish feeling if you aren’t keeping with your daily care routine. Whether you are working from home or out of work currently, sticking your usual morning routine of getting dressed and around for the day can quickly gear your mindset up.
  • Stay connected- Find new ways to communicate with friends and family. Some popular options include Zoom meetings, hand written letters and a simple phone call.

Performing A Job Search During A Pandemic /blog/performing-a-job-search-during-a-pandemic/ /blog/performing-a-job-search-during-a-pandemic/#respond Wed, 22 Apr 2020 18:53:49 +0000 /blog/?p=7688 Continue reading ]]> Whether you’re an upcoming college grad seeking your first career or a displaced employee, locating a new job during a pandemic takes a different approach. There are a number of factors that can make your job search a little slower than normal however, there are ways to ensure that you hit the top of a hiring manager’s list. Let me share the inside scoop from the hiring side…

  • Make Search Algorithms Your Best Friend- More than 22 million Americans have lost their jobs in the last month. Unemployment rates are the highest that they’ve been in decades and the volume of incoming claims is overwhelming state unemployment agencies causing major delays in payments. Tell you something you don’t know, right? This means employers are being flooded with talent and are relying on technology more than ever to help them pin point their next hire. Your resume absolutely has to have the critical keywords that are relevant to the role you are seeking. Important keywords to consider are: any licenses or credentials you have, software programs you are fluent in, machinery or equipment that you have experience in and details of your typical responsibilities. Think of your resume as precious real estate and make the most use of the space. You can impart your soft skills during an interview but your core experiences must be marketed on the resume.
  • Check The Job Posting Date- Many employers were forced to send staff home immediately with stay at home orders. This means jobs that were posted for what were immediate openings, are now on hold yet may still be posted online. Be sure to sort listings by posted date and apply to the newest jobs first. Most job boards also allow you to sign up for email or text alerts when new jobs meeting your search criteria are posted. This is a great way to get your information in front of hiring managers right away.
  • Partner With A Recruiter- Many employers will be apprehensive to bring on full time employees until they are certain that their business can sustain it. In previous economic rebounds a large number of employers looked to staffing firms to help them bridge this time period and hired the employees in permanently once business was more stable. A recruiter typically only presents an employer with 3 or less candidates for consideration, drastically increasing your chance for hire in comparison to an employer evaluating hundreds of applicants.
  • Stay Fresh- Staying active and in your normal routine will absolutely increase your chances of interviewing and presenting as well as you did before this pandemic hit. Stay engaged with your industry through podcasts and online blogs. This will give you great ideas to bring to a new employer and give you some great topics for discussion during interviews. Be sure to be knowledgeable of how local and state pandemic restrictions may impact your future role and employer.

While certainly more difficult, it is absolutely feasible to land your next role during this pandemic. Many essential businesses are up-scaling their teams to meet the increase in business demand and are eager to find new talent for these roles.

College Degree or Nothing? Not anymore! /blog/college-degree-or-nothing-not-anymore/ /blog/college-degree-or-nothing-not-anymore/#respond Tue, 05 Feb 2019 15:05:03 +0000 /blog/?p=6081 Continue reading ]]> Many of us grew up during a time where the notion of going to college was not only expected but was halfway shoved down our throats. Teachers, parents and even our peers were constantly talking about having a college degree was the only way to secure a stable and lucrative career. Many of us fed into this ideal resulting in thousands of dollars of student loan debt and leaving us wondering what was it all for. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are certainly specialized professions and positions that do require college degrees but that doesn’t mean that the college route is for everyone. For those of you that may have a passion for the medical industry, or a variety of engineering disciplines, college may still be the route to take. However, times are, in fact, changing and prospective job seekers have a wide variety of options available!

In today’s job market, it seems that every time the topic of labor shortages come up, the lack of skilled workers for trade positions in construction and in the manufacturing realm are in the forefront. Less and less students have been deciding that even if they are unsure what career path they want to go down, college is their only avenue. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 68% of high school students go to college with 40% never completing their degree. This is leaving highly paid and stable positions across the construction and manufacturing industries empty. Ultimately, we are left with the realization that the Baby Boomers who thrived with careers in these industries are starting to retire with no one to fill their shoes.

As I’ve mentioned before, the conversation regarding career options needs to start early! The idea of college being an end all beat all for post high school students needs to stop. Outside of the traditional 4-year degree, students have a variety of options available including vocational schools, trade specific training programs, online classes and even simply starting from the ground up. Sometimes the best way to learn a new trade is to start as entry-level as possible, observing those around you and gaining true on the job experience. But, don’t take my word for it. Educational leaders and even some of the nation’s most well known and profitable companies are jumping on board. David McGrath, an English Professor at the College of DuPage recently wrote an article regarding this very issue.

“We need to debunk the inference made by parents that vocational and technical jobs are inferior. Such a notion has led many of them to steer youngsters unwilling or unsuited for academic study into frustration, failure and depression. A campaign of public relations, parental education and cash is needed to combat the stigma.”

-David McGrath

Last spring, Glassdoor.com compiled a list of top employers that are expanding their talent pool by looking beyond the 4-year degree. Google, Apple, and IBM are all included in this progressive strategy in an attempt to bring in qualified and eager job seekers. In fact, Joanna Daley, IBM’s Vice President of Talent told CNBC that about 15% of IBM’s hires in the US do not have a college degree. IBM makes a point to include candidates with hands-on experience through coding boot-camps or even vocational classes.

The conversation needs to start now, whether that starts with school counselors or parents at home with their kids. We need to get rid of the stigma behind not going to college and provide our students with the support and proper education on available alternatives. Bottom line, college is not the answer for everyone and that is something worth shouting from the rooftops.
