What does this mean? Simply put, there are less workers today considering themselves in contingent or temporary positions overall. Even with all of the hype surrounding non-traditional work including freelancing, the results indicate that within the last 20 years, the US economy has remained largely unchanged in this regard. Ultimately, the report is finding that workers, although they may accept contingent or temporary work for the time being, would still prefer something long term.

Temporary Recruitment

It’s no secret that those in the workforce would prefer something with stability. It is, after all, simply human nature. However, there were also findings that indicate where the gig economy is still thriving. It appears that over half of the contingent workforce is likely to be under 25 years of age. This group of workers is also far more likely to be enrolled in school during this time. What does this tell you? It’s simple, the majority of the individuals currently partaking in the contingent workforce are doing so out of necessity, not necessarily desire. These contingent or temporary workers are using the gig economy as an ends to a means, but are still striving for that long-term, stable career.

Having stability in one’s career is not the only factor that today’s workforce is taking into consideration. Having access to employer-provided healthcare and retirement programs are proving to be extremely important to today’s job seekers. In fact, the study shows that only 35% of on call workers and 13% of temporary workers have access to any form of retirement plan. For those just entering the workforce, this may not be a big deal not but 10 years down the road, they may singing a different tune.

Long story short, with all of the hype surrounding the gig economy and freelancing, the bottom line remains the same; workers today are just as eager to find a long-term opportunity that can provide reassurance and stability as they were 20 years ago.

Effective On-boarding Practices Are A Must In Today’s Job Market! /blog/effective-on-boarding-practices-are-a-must-in-todays-job-market/ /blog/effective-on-boarding-practices-are-a-must-in-todays-job-market/#respond Thu, 18 Oct 2018 14:58:10 +0000 /blog/?p=5562 Continue reading ]]> A new study conducted by Kronos and the Human Capital Institute found that over three quarters of organizations are not effectively on-boarding new hires. In today’s extremely tight job market, locating and hiring top talent is hard enough, to only lose these individuals in the on-boarding process. But the question is, how ineffective are these processes and how is that affecting your ability to hire and retain employees?

iStock_000018270532Med

According to Staffinghubs.com, the following statistics were found after surveying 350 Human Resources leaders across the country.

  • Only 40% of respondents said that their on-boarding program was successful at retaining new hires
  • Nearly a quarter indicated they have no on-boarding program at all.
  • More than half of those survey said that managers don’t have time to dedicate to improving the on-boarding process.
  • 60% say that the purpose of on-boarding is to integrate new employees into the company culture, but only 30% indicate that their on-boarding process focuses on culture.

What does this tell us? Basically, that the low unemployment rate and qualified worker shortage isn’t the only reason that companies are struggling to locate and retain top talent. It is extremely important to remember that the on-boarding process is one of the 1st introductions to your company for a new hire. If the process is too lengthy, feels disconnected from the company culture or paints your company with an unflattering light, this could be enough to deter a would-be candidate from continuing on in the process.

It is true that on-boarding can feel like a daunting process for companies large and small. However, if this is the case for your company, there are staffing companies out there that specialize in the paperwork and administration side of on-boarding, allowing your company to focus on the long term success of each new hire. As we have entered fourth quarter in 2018, the ball is certainly still in the employee’s court, forcing companies to adapt new policies and upgrade existing processes in order to attract what talent is out there and seeking work. The result of studies such as this one is proof that with a few tweaks to internal processes, companies can once again regain the competitive advantage. College Grads, Still Seeking Your First Post School Job? /blog/college-grads-still-seeking-your-first-post-school-job/ /blog/college-grads-still-seeking-your-first-post-school-job/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 14:15:31 +0000 /blog/?p=5541 Continue reading ]]> Whether you graduated from a college or university this past Spring or Summer, if you’re still struggling to find your first post college job, it may be time to switch up your strategy a bit.

Interview Large

For many college graduates, the prospect of finding your first post college opportunity can feel overwhelming and a scary prospect. However, there are few key factors to keep in mind while you are searching for employment in this tight job market.

  1. Do some research and contact your local temporary agency. Working with a temporary agency will allow you to not only gain experience in your preferred industry but these types of agency can typically get you working in a shorter amount of time. In a job market as tight as this one, you are not the only group struggling. Employers and companies nationwide are having a hard time finding qualified candidates to fill their open positions, leading them to turn to temporary agencies.
  2. As ideal as it would be for your first job out of college to be your long-term position, it will most likely be the first of multiple stepping stones. As it is becoming more common practice for companies to take employees away from each other, job length expectancy is certainly shorter than it used to be. However, employers are aware of this being an issue and are working towards a solution. Currently, there is a huge culture shift within organizations to put more emphasis on employee retention and recognition in order to secure top talent for a longer period of time.
  3. Continue to develop your education and knowledge in your respective industry. While receiving a college degree is a fantastic accomplishment, it is only the first step in developing who you are going to be as a working professional. On the job experience is just as important to ensuring that you are forever adapting to changes in industry, technology and social economics. Regardless of your area of expertise and the level at which you are in your career, it is imperative to continue to stay on top of the best practices and changes in your respective industry as a whole. This may arise from on the job learning, online courses, company provided training, etc.

The main takeaway here is patience. We all want to graduate from college, land our dream job and be done with it. The reality is that through hard-work, determination and an eagerness to grow in your field, your dream career could be just around the corner, you just have to be patient and treat each job and opportunity as a stepping stone down your career path.
