Spring 2018 graduation is fast approaching, which got me thinking, what can these soon to be college graduates expect to find as they are looking to start their careers? As you may notice, it appears that the majority of the most sought after positions for 2018 are in the medical and sciences field. But why? While other factors such as job location, hours, work to life balance, etc. may come into play, the main qualities that job seekers look for in a new career seem to be universal. Job seekers tend to gravitate towards those positions that offer higher salaries and opportunities for growth. Healthcare and Healthcare IT are expecting to be two of the fastest growing industries now through 2026. In fact, it is believed that between now and 2026, employment in Healthcare will grow 18% and the employment rate is expected to continue to grow .7% annually, which is an increase of .2% over the past 10 years. This could translate into 2.3 million new jobs overall in that same time frame. Currently, Healthcare positions occupy 20 of the top 25 careers on this year’s complete list.

However, the healthcare boom isn’t just focusing on doctors and nurses but healthcare technology is playing a huge role. Positions such as Information Security Analysts and IT Managers are becoming more sought after and in higher demand. Commercial Construction Trends to Watch in 2018!

After construction spending hit a record all-time high in November of 2017, what can the construction industry expect out of 2018? Here are the top 5 trends to watch out for in commercial construction in the coming months.

Continued Labor Shortages: Construction companies across the country have felt the sting of skilled labor shortages over the past few years. While researchers and economists have continued to see a slow uptick in the number of construction industry jobs added each year, we still fall short of the 336,000 jobs that were added in 2015 (210,000 were added in 2017 for comparison). With this said, a recent survey by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) shows that 75% of firms surveyed are planning to add to their workforce in 2018. While that seems promising, 78% of those companies also have been experiencing difficulties in locating talent and expect the issues to continue.
Offsite Construction: Just as the trend of modular and prefabrication as a construction method seemed to be diminishing, it has gained steam over the last couple of years and it is expected to continue to do so. For companies that use offsite construction, the benefits are making the transition easier to handle. Having the ability to build and construct buildings in a controlled environment enables companies to work year-round without weather being a factor and creates a safer working environment for their employees. Just one example of this trend is Marriott, the hotel giant, committed to having 13% of all hotels be built using offsite construction methods in 2018.
Technology: While the construction industry has been slow in adopting technological advances, it appears that the companies who have started to embrace technology are really seeing the benefits. From using robotic equipment on job sites, drones being used to perform land surveys, and even construction based software to help interpret and visualize projects, technology is beginning to make its presence known all over the construction industry landscape.
Sustainability: The trend of sustainability far out reaches just the construction industry. Everywhere you look these days, companies are looking to become more environmentally responsible and reduce their overall carbon footprint. This concept is no different in the construction industry. From introducing green components to a project’s scope and increasing policies regarding recycling construction waste, the sustainability trend doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
Subdued Growth: While forecast models do not show any exponential growth in 2018, models indicate that spending and starts will remain strong throughout the year. ConstructConnect’s construction starts forecast for 2018 is a 4.8% increase to $773.1 billion. Commercial construction (offices, parking garages and transportation terminals) is expected to have a 12.4% increase in starts next year with conservative growth out through 2021. ConstructConnect’s forecast for total construction spending is expected to increase 5.6% to $1,301.3 billion in 2018. Total nonresidential construction is expected to grow 3.9% to $737.2 billion and total residential is forecast to increase 7.8% to $564.1 billion.

2018 Talent Shortages: What To Expect and What To Do!

As unemployment continues to drop and more in the baby boomer generation are retiring, companies nationwide in a wide variety of industries are beginning to feel the sting of talent shortages. With this in mind, who might get hit the hardest this year and what can be done about it?

According to Fast Company Article, the following industries/sectors are at the highest risk for experiencing talent shortages between now and 2025.

Skilled trades, including Electricians, Machinists and Welders
Healthcare, including Occupational and Physical Therapy Aides
Manufacturing, including Production Workers and Engineers
Sales, including professionals with a solid combination of social and cognitive skills
Math-related fields, including Actuaries and Statisticians

So, we know what is coming but what can we do to prepare for it? Here are a few steps your organization can take to try and overcome talent shortages either currently or in the future.

Forecast any long-term hiring needs. A talent shortage results in less available workers which equals a greater time to fill and find qualified applicants. The key is to be prepared! Instead of waiting until you have the need, forecast what your need may be based on historical data and start sourcing the talent now!
Recruit passive talent. The idea behind a talent shortage is that the majority of potential hires are already working elsewhere, but that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t be persuaded to jump ship. In order to convince a passive candidate to leave a current position for a new one, we must do a better job of selling our jobs. Recruiters now must also be sales people for each of their positions in order to get talent in the door. Whether this means emphasizing company culture, pay, hours, benefits, etc., we must give potential employees a reason to want to leave a current position.
- Take advantage of referrals. When recruiting passive talent, we must take advantage of any and all referrals that we can access. The following saying generally holds true, good people know good people. These referrals may come from vendors, clients, employees etc., so it is very important to share any job openings with all of these potential sources.

Knowing what is coming down the pipeline is half the battle. Being well prepared and better equipped to combat these issues will help to ensure that your company can make the best of any labor shortages you may experience in the coming years.
