Right? Here are some interesting facts recently shared by recruiter.com, that may just change your opinions on candidates and how to communicate with them!

Most often, the first candidates that we encounter in a talent search are active candidates. Why? Because they have taken an active role in their career search and made their information available to you via applications, resume submissions, or online resume presentations. Just how active are they?

  • 74% of active candidates are truly active in seeking a new career
  • 30% of active candidates claim to search for jobs on a weekly basis
  • A startling 35% of active candidates actually began preparing for their next job after only weeks at their current position
  • 29% of active job seekers have listed social media as their primary job search tool
  • 74% of active candidates use online searching to locate jobs

What does this mean to you? Candidates continue to rely on technology more heavily to help them land their next position. If you are seeking qualified talent, it’s more important than ever to have a social media and online presence that best describes your company and it’s culture. With 35% of active job seekers beginning their search within weeks of starting their current position, locating the right fit is crucial. Beginning in the interview process, be very open with candidates about the nature of their position, the company culture, and expectations. Eliminating these common areas for miscommunication can greatly decrease the chances of your new hire looking to make a move.

Passive candidates are often in high demand for more skilled positions. Many employers look to passive candidates because they typically are employed, are stable in their employment, and seem dedicated to their current employer.

  • 47% of candidates with less than one year on the job are willing to consider new career options
  • 36% of passive candidates are happily employed but open to accepting a new position
  • 80% fit the profile of a passive candidate
  • 73% of passive candidates rely on their personal networks to learn about new opportunities
  • 40% are willing to consider new possibilities if contacted by a recruiter

Obviously attracting and reaching passive candidates differs significantly from reaching active candidates. While posting job opportunities online may reach active candidates quickly, it is less likely to attract those candidates who are satisfied in their current career. Social media, because of it’s large reach and sharing features may be an ideal place to reach candidates in both categories. Social media allows employers a great opportunity to showcase careers, company culture, goals and missions of their organization, and more.

Regardless of the pool of candidates that you are reaching to, the search for top level talent is difficult in almost every industry. While unemployment numbers continue to drop and technology advancements begin to take a more active role in replacing workforce vacancies; the demand for skilled and professional talent is at an all time high. If you are currently recruiting to fill workforce vacancies within your organization, broadening and diversifying your current recruitment tools will greatly improve your chances to making the right hire.

Hiring HR Professionals /blog/hiring-hr-professionals/ /blog/hiring-hr-professionals/#respond Fri, 16 Nov 2012 21:33:32 +0000 /blog/?p=321 Continue reading ]]> Whether it’s a litigation case, recruiting challenges, or managing health care reform; you’ve determined it’s time to hire an HR Manager. Has your organization previously disbursed these duties over multiple departments or employees? Have you found this is an inefficient use of your resources? Let us help!

Human Resources typically handle many critical functions including: litigation issues, workforce disputes, benefits and payroll administration, creating company procedures, creating training programs, recruiting, as well as hiring and termination procedures. HR most often is heavily involved in the hiring and on boarding processes, allowing them a great influence on company culture, employee turnover, and overall productivity in the workplace.

Allowing one person or a small team, access to that amount of influence and company information can be overwhelming. Keep in mind, a true HR professional will be a strong supporter of confidentiality, fairness, and integrity. Here are some great tips for hiring the right HR professional for you:

  • Find an HR professional who will be able to handle your company’s growth and expansion.
  • Determine what your primary goals for the position are.
  • Find a candidate who mirrors your company culture.
  • Find a candidate you can trust with your trade secrets and internal information.
  • Make sure your interview, job descriptions, and conversations are legally compliant.
  • Obtain references from peers, former employers, and those who have worked under the candidate.
  • Find a candidate with experience in your industry.
  • Set and discuss the goals for the position.

Hiring human resource professionals requires experience in legal compliance, a strong ability to probe during an interview, and creative interview questions. HR candidates are used to being on the other side of the desk and typically know the answers that you want to hear; therefore screening for these level of positions should only be handled by a seasoned interviewer. Human resources usually sets the tone for the work environment and is key to employee development, productivity, and legal protection. Hiring the right person for your company and your company’s goals is imperative, probably more so than most other positions.

North Dakota: Construction Staffing Shortage /blog/north-dakota-construction-staffing-shortage/ /blog/north-dakota-construction-staffing-shortage/#respond Thu, 08 Nov 2012 22:00:41 +0000 /blog/?p=303 Continue reading ]]> Recent improvements in the economy have made skilled tradespeople increasingly difficult to recruit. This is something the state of North Dakota is all to aware of. While most of the country is still experiencing moderate unemployment rates, the state of North Dakota has had unemployment rates as low as 1-3% this year. Sounds like a good thing right? Not if you ask the employers and contractors seeking talent.

Most of the country took a major hit when the economy crashed in 2008, North Dakota experienced the opposite affect. The Bakkon Shale, a large oil field located primarily in North Dakota, became a “gold mine” for the state’s economy. Containing billlions of barrels of oil, the Bakken formation has created a boom for skilled and unskilled workers alike. According to Construction Executive Magazine, the workforce in North Dakota alone has increased by almost 10,000 people since 2008.

Reports show the demand for talent in North Dakota is taking a huge toll on the state. Because of the demand for talent many contractors are attempting to attract out of state personnel or traveling tradespeople to the area to assist with the growing demands in construction and oil industries. Construction in the area is in great demand to create processing plants, warehouses, and other storage facilities to accomodate in the increase oil production. The increased number of people coming to the state also opens positions in hospitality, food service, and other industries to assist with the influx of business. Employers and contractors that are inexperienced in relocating talent or managing traveling tradespeople, will experience a number of growing pains and financial loses due to turnover. See our blog on hiring travelers here.

North Dakota is only one area of the country struggling to locate talent. Trillium is proud to offer top level talent in construction and other industries nationwide.

A Simple Step That Can Save You Thousands Of Dollars Annually! /blog/a-simple-step-that-can-save-you-thousands-of-dollars-annually/ /blog/a-simple-step-that-can-save-you-thousands-of-dollars-annually/#respond Thu, 08 Nov 2012 18:24:12 +0000 /blog/?p=290 Continue reading ]]> With annual budgets just around the corner, are you looking for ways to improve spending? Could saving your organization thousands of dollars with little time and resources be of benefit to you? Listen up, we have a solution!

Employee turnover can cost you anywhere from 30-200% of the employee’s annual wages. Ouch, right? Turnover of just two Administrative Assistants could cost your organization tens of thousands of dollars in a year! A quick analysis of your hiring process could make all the difference in the world.

How do reference checks affect your hiring process? Do you have a consistent method? Is it done with every hire? Now is the time to start! The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, so be sure to do your research! Many employers today only offer very limited if any, information on current or previous employees. Here are some great tips on how to get the most of out of your reference checks:

  • Probe to find the right references. Most employees are going to list the top 3 references that they know will speak highly of them. Ask them for additional contacts, this may open the doors to co-workers or supervisors who will give more information than just dates of employment and verifying of work history.
  • Take your time. If they were worth reference checking, then they were worth a thorough reference check. Use some of the same probing questions that you use during an interview. See if their references describe the candidate in the same way that they describe themselves.
  • Ask for examples. If they describe the candidate as a problem solver, ask for specific instances in which they had solved problems in the past.
  • Ask for referrals. Questions like, “If I chose not to hire this candidate for a _______role, who would you recommend?” are great ways to gain additional candidates and insight for your open position.

Hiring the right candidate the first time can be a great savings of time and resources. If you are struggling to gain thorough information during a reference check, consider partnering with a recruitment agency. Recruiters spend far more time reference checking than most employers due to the volume of candidates that they represent. This most often allows them to gain rapport with other hiring managers, in addition to their existing client relationships. Often times their network allows them obtain more information than what someone with no rapport is able to gain.

Unfortunately many manufacturers have lost their inventory due to flooding. Building damages have left many additional industrial manufacturers without the ability to run production for months, if not longer. How has this affected your production sales?

We are already receiving calls from manufacturers who have had an increased production demand as a result of their competitors being unable to provide product to in-need clients. Are you prepared to accommodate any additional production volume that may come your way? Now is the time to prepare! Skilled technical manufacturing talent is hard to locate, it’s even harder to locate in a hurry. The caliber of employee needed to run multimillion dollar machinery is not something any hiring manager takes lightly. Now is the time to grow and expand your talent pool, before you lose the business to a competitor! Before adding technical manufacturing workers to your staff consider the following:

  • Make sure they are able to pass skills based testing, relevant to the position you’re hiring for.
  • Make sure they have experience with your materials, machinery, and programs. Learning to adapt, even for an experienced worker can be difficult to do quickly.
  • Complete thorough background and reference checks. With the current demand for experienced CNC and other technical manufacturing related talent; strong talent is not often unemployed for long.
  • Get the specifics on their work history. Are they experienced in multiple changeovers? Are the tolerances they have worked with in the past within reason for your product line?

Let’s face it, hiring talent is difficult. Hiring strong talent in a hurry can be nearly impossible. The industry leading experts at Trillium specialize in just that. With over 80 offices nationwide and over 5,000 clients; our reputation speaks for itself.
